Letter to Newspaper Editors: Human Health and Safety Concerns

For those who are having difficulty understanding the resistance to Christo, please consider these facts: Currently it takes Western Fremont County’s Arkansas Valley Ambulance from 35 to 45 minutes to respond to a call. It then takes that long again to transport the individual(s) to a hospital. This is entirely due to the distances involved from the thousands of homes in the West end to either Salida or Canon City, where there are hospitals. There is only one road going to either location – Highway 50. It doesn’t matter if Christo has placed an ambulance on every county road, it will still take hours to get the person to the hospital. Helicopters will be of little use in parts of this deep and narrow canyon.

Let’s throw in to the mix the predicted thousands of cars on Hwy. 50 and slow the rate of travel to, say, 10 miles an hour over the distance of 45 miles. We now have a 6-hour transport time and, if there was a mass casualty incident, neither hospital could handle this. So you can add transport time to Pueblo or Colorado Springs.

Can you place yourself in the position of you or a loved one being a victim?
How, in good conscience, could anyone say that this project will be “a minor inconvenience”? Furthermore, how can our entrusted public officials allow this nightmare to be inflicted upon us? To place more value on “art” than on human life is barbaric, and purely greedy in nature. I challenge health care professionals to take a public stand against the Christo project.

ROAR recently sent all permitting agencies hundreds of signatures opposing the project. We beg those in charge to consider the wishes of the people and stop the process now.
